With Uncle, expect the unexpected.

I realize that this is a very early feature to implement, as only a few people are able to view 3D images/movies on their TV/Computer. However, I believe that modern 3D will be at a much affordable price in a few years.

What’s more, I couldn’t find any anime website featuring a lot of Anaglyphic/Stereoscopic 3D images, so I thought I’d take the first step in what may be a common trend in the near future.

I’m not gonna explain in detail what Anaglyphic and Stereoscopic 3D are, though I think the following example is pretty self-explaining :

Basically, this works by applying an offset to the original image : one image for each eye.
While Stereoscopic 3D is much better than Anaglyphic 3D (like.. day and night), it is much more expensive because you need 3D Glasses, a 3D compatible Graphic Card, and a Monitor with a refresh rate of 120Hz or higher. Anaglyph glasses are all you need to watch Anaglyphic videos and images, and it doesn’t cost more than a few $ in comparison.

From now on, you will sometimes see those two icons below a PotD :

Clicking on those will allow you to download the Anaglyphic/Stereoscopic 3D image of the featured PotD.
Icons may change in the future, just using those for now.

Producing a good 3D picture is unfortunately not as simple as creating an offset on the original picture ! It requires some deeper editing to better recreate the “depth” feeling.
Also, the more your eyes are used to 3D, the more offset you can apply. The more offset you apply, the better the 3D effect.
The offset I am using for the 3D PotD is far from being small, so it may take some time for your eyes to get used to it.
I haven’t had the chance to try Anaglyphic 3D yet, but I’ve ordered glasses so I’ll be able to make some proper images in the very near future.

Last but not least, there will probably be some bleeding on the 3D pictures. This is a side-effect of the conversion. Not sure how far this can be fixed, but I’ll try to find some ways to reduce that effect.

Next PotD will be the first one to feature a 3D version. The “18+ Random Pictures” category will also feature 3D art from time to time. Otanoshimi.
